There are over 75 doctors with offices on the Shore, including a number of specialists. The care tends to be individual, and it’s likely that no matter where you live, somewhere nearby you will have a doctor as your neighbor. We don’t personally know many doctors, but our own has medical degrees from Duke and Johns Hopkins.
The Eastern Shore Hospital, Riverside Shore Memorial, has just opened a brand-new 150 bed hospital just off the highway in Onley. It is part of the Riverside family of hospitals across the bay and around the region.
It provides 24 hour care and a full time emergency room, along with a cancer center. In addition, Riverside Shore Memorial is a comprehensive regional health system serving Eastern Virginia which offers Lifecare, Rehab, Healthcare at home, and Cardiopulmonary Wellness Service. Eastern Shore Rural Health recently acquired land near Eastville for a new outpatient health care center, which should be opening in the next few years.
Norfolk, approximately 30 minutes from the Cape Charles area, has a number of excellent hospitals staffed by specialists in almost every conceivable area, including Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, which is ranked as the number one hospital in Virginia by US News and World Report. Salisbury and Norfolk both have trauma centers. Additionally, there are a number of clinics and health care centers up and down the Shore.
